Develop Yourself Naturally:

What You Can Learn from a Tree

Nature is an excellent teacher, and trees are a great example of its lessons. They grow strong roots that go deep into the earth and spread throughout the forest floor. I must admit I am a bit of a tree hugger. What’s not to love about their energy, beauty, and the cool shade they provide on a hot day?

Over my lifetime, I have learned so much from trees. They are deeply rooted and reach for the stars with their branches. By following a tree’s example, we can learn to dream big, live boldly, and stay grounded and focused while reaching for the stars. Anything is possible when you are supported and determined.

As a tree’s roots expand deep into the earth, they fuse with fungus to create tiny highways that transport essential nutrients to their branches and leaves. This process is a form of inner development and growth. The tree’s strong roots help it withstand weather challenges and tests of time.

Just like a tree with hidden roots, you are also stronger than you know. You can learn to bend and flex when needed, and with a curious mind, you can continue that inner development and growth.

A tree stands quiet and still.

Stillness is an essential part of self-care and personal development. Take the time to be quiet and reflect on where you are now. Dream about where you want to grow, listen to your inner knowing, and be mindful.

I took the photo above while visiting an ancient Mayan ruins. Trees have been sacred to indigenous people for millennia. For example, the Ceiba was a sacred tree to the Mayans.

Hippocrates once wrote: “Nature itself is the best physician.”

In Japan, some people practice “forest bathing,” or spending time around trees, as part of a preventive health regimen.

Spending time with trees has also been shown to reduce blood pressure, relieve stress, improve well-being, and boost immunity.

Trees give us so much. They provide oxygen for us to breathe, fruit for us to eat, shade to protect us from heat, and homes for our animal friends, to name a few.

ILike trees, we should also give of ourselves, express kindness, and support others.

Did you know that trees are connected and interdependent?

Beneath the forest floor, a network of fungi called a mycorrhizal network creates pathways between all the trees in the forest. The fungi link the trees together to exchange nutrients for carbon.

Trees use this network to detect illness in other trees and send them nutrients. A central hub tree helps to support the other saplings and trees in need, much like a leader supports and develops their team.

So, what is the lesson here? It is important to have a solid social network and remain connected to others.

No matter how strong the roots and network are, a tree also practices interdependence.

Interdependence is a crucial skill for everyone to cultivate, not only as a person but also as a leader. Knowing when to foster collaboration and cooperation and strengthen relationships is vital for a leader. Learning to balance interdependence with independence and individual decision-making will improve one’s leadership skills.

We all have so much to learn by simply being present and paying attention to nature’s lessons.

Work towards staying grounded, growing strong roots, and reaching for the sky with your dreams. Give of yourself to others, develop your social network connections, and balance independence with interdependence.

Be open to receiving from others while practicing stillness and reflection.

Try a Japanese forest bath. I promise your time spent sitting against or hugging a tree will be worth it.
