Why Not Upcycle You? Build Value and Create Your Best Self
One of my new hobbies for this year has been practicing upcycling.
Since I have had more free time, I have been able to try my hand at crafting and creative projects, like upcycling old jean jackets into fun, new garments. Each unique article of clothing has been entertaining to make.
What is upcycling? Upcycling is another facet of the sustainability movement that calls on us to reuse and recycle to help keep our planet clean and healthier.
It consists of reusing a product or good in a way that adds additional value, so the end product is more valuable than the initial one.
Rebuild, repurpose, and reuse to add more worth.
How cool is that?
Upcycling is good for the planet and promotes creativity, which is good for your brain and fun to practice.
Recently, I was in Kennebunkport, Maine, where I found a shop dedicated to selling only upcycled goods. It was amazing to see how people had turned old records, clothing, and household items into wearable art, jewelry, and valuable creations.
My husband purchased a new bracelet made from an old bicycle chain. It would never have crossed my mind to repurpose a bike chain into a bracelet, but what an interesting way to repurpose an old bike.
If we can upcycle goods, why can’t we apply the same concept to ourselves? Why don’t we add more value to ourselves by being creative and repurposing ourselves in some way?
There are always opportunities to grow, learn, and add new knowledge and skills to our lives.
Taking time to practice intentional personal development will add to your arsenal of tools, which you can then apply to your life and your workplace.
Be creative and repurpose yourself. What can you envision as possibilities for your future? A new career path or a novel hobby to learn?
It’s possible that a new-fangled approach is out there that you can utilize in your current role or job.
Try taking a course in a subject different from anything you have studied before.
The sky is the limit here, so be creative and upcycle yourself.
As you enhance your capabilities, skills and knowledge you create more value for yourself and can bring additional benefits to your life and to your work.
You can become more than you are right now. You can build additional value and create your best future self.
Be bold and step into your limitless possibilities.
Even though I have never been a solid seamstress, I tried my best at sewing that new jean jacket creation. How hard could it be, right?
Well, I did all my sewing by hand, and it was more complicated than I had expected.
I had to take apart what I had sewn more than a few times, but I kept at it. I kept learning and experimenting while trying to stay curious and open.
My fingers may have been pricked a lot, and I was frustrated now and again, but I persevered.
I had a vision for this jacket, and I had a vision for myself.
When it was completed, it was fun to see the finished product and to know that I had been the one to create something so unique. I had made something more valuable than the old, worn-out jean jacket from a local garage sale.
In addition to having an amazing new piece of clothing, I have also learned a new hobby and skill.
Not only did I upcycle the old jean jacket, but I also upcycled myself as well.
Try upcycling yourself and unleash your hidden talents and your infinite potential.
You will never know what you are capable of if you don’t challenge yourself and try new things.
Build value within you and create your best self.
Love and Light,
Jackie
